I love the lengths Google will go to capture the UK's landmarks.
From Daily Mail: Google's Street View, which has created an online street map of Britain, is heading off-road to capture some cultural gems.
Pedalling a high-tech 'Google Trike', they will photograph monuments off the beaten track from the ancient Stonehenge to the far more modern Angel of the North. Street View allows users to access 360-degree views of streets and millions of homes in 25 British cities and caused furious protests by privacy campaigners when it launched.
Villagers in Broughton, Cambridgeshire, refused to let a Google car take pictures of their homes by forming a human chain. Despite this, Google has mounted special cameras on 18st mechanical tricycles to explore areas of the UK this summer that are not accessible to cars.
These will photograph six landmarks that were chosen by voters in an online poll commissioned by Google and VisitBritain. A further seventh 'wildcard' location was chosen by Google. The six winners that are spread throughout the UK are: Stonehenge, Millennium Stadium, Angel of the North, Loch Ness, Eden Project, Warwick Castle.

One word: Texas.
From AP: Forth Worth's mayor has apologized for a June raid on a Texas gay bar that sparked claims of brutality and procedure violations.
About 250 people packed City Council chambers Tuesday and another 150 watched on televisions in the hallway or overflow rooms as officials briefly discussed the June 28 raid that left one man hospitalized with a serious head injury.
At one point during Tuesday's meeting, someone in the audience called out for an apology.
Mayor Mike Moncrief then said: "If you want an apology from the mayor of Fort Worth: I am sorry about what happened in Fort Worth." The crowd erupted in applause and stood.
The Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission and Fort Worth Police Department are investigating the raid, which was conducted jointly by their agencies.

And I hope they were big - sloppy - wet tongue kisses too.
Julie Bolcer writes for Advocate: Dozens of gay couples held a kiss-in at Temple Square in Salt Lake City on Sunday to protest the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for detaining a gay couple who kissed on church property.
During the incident, first reported by The Salt Lake Tribune, Matt Aune and Derek Jones say that LDS Church security detained them on Thursday and Salt Lake City police cited them for trespassing after they kissed on the cheek on Main Street Plaza. The property was sold to the church by the city in the late '90s, although many couples continue to pose affectionately for photos on the space.
Aune, 28, and Jones, 25, told the newspaper that they were walking back to their nearby home in the evening when they crossed the plaza holding hands, then stopped to kiss on the cheek. Several security guards arrived and told the couple that public displays of affection are not allowed on church property.
When Aune and Jones protested, they were handcuffed, and police were called. Aune and Jones were barred from LDS Church headquarters campus for six months.

On this date in 1923 the Hollywood sign is officially dedicated. It would go on to become the iconic image of Los Angeles. Perched in the Hollywood hills tourist from all over the world have their picture taken with the sign just over their shoulder.
From Wikipedia: The Hollywood Sign is a famous landmark in the Hollywood Hills area of Mount Lee in Los Angeles, California, spelling out the name of the area in 50 feet (15 m) high white letters. It was created as an advertisement in 1923, but garnered increasing recognition after the sign was left up. The sign was a frequent target of pranks and vandalism but has since undergone restoration, including a security system to deter vandalism. The sign is protected and promoted by the Hollywood Sign Trust, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to physically maintain, repair and secure the sign, to educate the world about its historical and cultural importance, and to raise the funds necessary to accomplish these projects.
The sign originally read "HOLLYWOODLAND", and its purpose was to advertise a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. H.J. Whitley had already used a sign to advertise his development Whitley Heights, which was located between Highland Avenue and Vine Avenue. He suggested to his friend Harry Chandler, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, that the land syndicate in which he was involved make a similar sign to advertise their land. Real estate developers Woodruff and Shoults called their development "Hollywoodland" and advertised it as a "superb environment without excessive cost on the Hollywood side of the hills."
They contracted the Crescent Sign Company to erect thirteen letters on the hillside, each facing south. The sign company owner, Thomas Fisk Goff (1890–1984) designed the sign. Each letter of the sign was 30 ft (9 m) wide and 50 ft (15 m) high, and was studded with some 4000 light bulbs. The sign was officially dedicated on July 13, 1923. It was not intended to be permanent. Some sources say its expected life was to be about a year and a half, but after the rise of the American cinema in Los Angeles it became an internationally recognized symbol, and was left there.

I'm gonna believe that this wasn't a racist thing. But he has been renamed.
From The Local: This spring the zoo in the eastern German city named a newborn mandrill “Obama” after freshly inaugurated US President Barack Obama. But an advocacy group for black Germans demanded that the primate be renamed this week, calling the zoo’s choice racist.
“It’s a catastrophe,” director of the Initiative for Black Germans (ISD) Tahir Della told The Local on Friday. “Black people continue to be confronted by associations with the animal kingdom and primitivity.”
The baby mandrill, which belongs to a species closely related to the baboon, was born on March 23, Manuela Collmar, zookeeper at the zoo’s “Afrika Haus,” told The Local earlier this week. Each year the zoo names all newborn animals beginning with the same letter.
“This year they all begin with ‘O,’ and one of the zookeepers chose ‘Obama’ – it was meant to be positive and an honour in light of his visit to Dresden in June,” Collmar said, adding that neither she nor her colleagues were aware of the history of using monkeys to caricature and ethnically stereotype black people.
In an email response to ISD director Della’s complaint about the mandrill’s name on Thursday, zoo director Karl-Heinz Ukena echoed her sentiments.
“The possible associations of this name choice were not considered, and the racist charicterisation – particularly with the background that the US president recently visited Dresden – was far off,” Ukena wrote, adding that the zoo had meant to express its “esteem” for Obama.

He's great as the host of American Idol - but $45 million great? WOW.
From Money Times: And, as expected the 34-year-old television personality has signed a three-year $45 million contract Monday with CKX Inc., parent of Idol producer 19 Entertainment. With the deal, Ryan has now become the highest-paid reality TV show host in history.
Ryan’s new three-year $45 million or $15 million-per-season deal triples his $5 million-per-season salary he earned in the Idol's eighth season, according to Reuters.
The exclusivity element of Ryan's newly inked contract with CKX applies only to broadcast TV and won't effect his other agreements, meaning Ryan can maintain his cable agreement with Comcast and his gig as E! Entertainment's main anchor, can continue to produce Keeping Up with the Kardashians for E! and a future Jamie Oliver reality series for ABC.
The pact will also provide the opportunity for Ryan’s production company Seacrest Productions banner or RSP and "Americal Idol" creator and chief executive of 19 Entertainment, Simon Fuller, to work together on new entertainment endeavors.

Going into today's match against Germany the Spanish team without Rafael Nadal was up 2-1 with Fernando Verdasco looking to wrap up the victory against Phillipp Kohlschreiber. It was the 4th match in the final last year where Fernando won and became a national hero. Today he lost - but it was oh so close, 8-6 in the 5th set.
So with the tie all even at 2 apiece it was up to Juan Carlos Ferrero to call on his clay court legend to down Andreas Beck in straight sets. I bet that felt good, it's been a long time since JC has been front and center in Spanish tennis. Spain will face the Israeli team in the semi-finals.
Rafael Nadal sat this tie out due to his knee injury. He has been spotted recently having fun with friends... He says he plans to be back to compete in Montreal next month.
I'd like a ride please.
Oh, the US team lost to Croatia today. Boo. Hiss.
The Croats will face the Czech team in the other semi.

Well earned Monica - it's where you belong.
Yesterday tennis legend Monica Seles was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. Monica in her career won 9 Grand Slam titles: 4 Australian Opens (91, 92, 93, 96), 2 US Opens (91, 92), 3 French Opens (90, 91, 92). And in all she collected 53 WTA Tour titles.
Monica burst onto the scene as a 15 year-old in 1988 and won the 5th professional tournament she played in Chicago in 1989 handing Chris Evert a shock loss. A year later Monica found herself in the French Open final against Steffi Graf - who would be her arch rival - Monica won that match in straight sets. She quickly took over the #1 ranking from Steffi and went on a tear winning 7 of the 8 Grand Slams she entered.
In May of 1993 Monica was playing a quarter-final match at a smaller tournament in Hamburg heading toward the French Open as the 3-time defending champion when a crazed Graf fan stabbed her in the back during a change-over. Monica left the game for over 2 years... Oh what might have been.
Monica's first tournament back was in Toronto in 1995 where she blitzed the field to take the title. Her stats were unreal - of the 10 sets she played only two got as close as 6-3 and there were three bagel sets including one in the final. A few weeks later Monica found herself in the final of the US Open against her old foe Steffi Graf and lost a close 3-setter.
Monica bounced back in 1996 to win the last of her 9 Slams at the Australian Open. After that she was hindered by a nagging foot injury and a serious weight problem. And then their were the four players she just couldn't seem to get past: Graf, Venus Williams, Serena Williams and Martina Hingis. The last match she played was a 1st round loss to Nadia Petrova at the 2003 French Open.
Monica said during her speech, "Growing up as a little girl, I could never dream I would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. I have a hard time believing it now. I grew up on the WTA Tour. That was my home. I grew up in the media spotlight. It can be challenging at times."

Already with this shit people...
From AP: A gay couple say they were detained by security guards on a plaza owned by the Mormon church and later cited by police, claiming it stemmed from a kiss on the cheek.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said that the men became argumentative and refused to leave after being asked to stop their "inappropriate behavior." The men say they were targeted because they are gay.
Matt Aune said he and his partner, Derek Jones, were walking home from a concert nearby on Thursday night, cutting through the plaza near the Salt Lake City Mormon temple.
Aune, 28, said he gave Jones, 25, a hug and kiss and that the two were then approached by a security guard, who asked them to leave, telling them they were being inappropriate and that public displays of affection aren't allowed on the property. He said other guards arrived and the men were handcuffed.
Further: Police later arrived and both men were cited with misdemeanor trespassing, Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Snyder said.
"It doesn't matter what they were asked to leave for," Snyder said. "If they are asked to leave and don't they are ... trespassing."
